Reliance Rail, through Downer EDI Rail, used the capacity of Asia’s largest passenger rail vehicle manufacturer, Changchun Railway Vehicles Co (CRC), to produce the passenger cars.

The Waratah trains are designed in Australia in accordance with Australian and international standards as well as incorporating the latest advances in rolling stock technology. The CRC manufacturing team was supported on site in China by a team from the Downer EDI Rail-Hitachi Joint Venture.

CRC is a world-class rolling stock manufacturer, with advanced manufacturing facilities producing rail cars for domestic and international markets. CRC's facilities contain the best of French, German and Japanese technology. Click here for a “tour” of CRC's facilities.

CRC has significant expertise in stainless steel car body construction including the manufacture of approximately 540 stainless steel cars for the Beijing Metro, and has currently built more than 200 stainless steel metro cars for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in preparation for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

CRC has built trains in joint venture arrangements with major international rolling stock manufacturers including Alstom, Hitachi, Bombardier and Siemens, including 40 trains with Bombardier for the Beijing Airport line for the 2008 Olympics.

Both Sydney Trains and the Downer EDI Rail – Hitachi Joint Venture had on-site personnel in Changchun providing quality, safety and project management oversight, audit and governance to ensure that construction and testing conforms to the specified design.
